I bought a Shop Smith thinking I would be able to become a woodworker. HA HA. 😂
This was 2001 so the first thing I tried was my lathe tools to turn a candle holder. Again HA HA 😂. I didn’t know you had to sharpen the tools so it was no go. The next 5 or 6 years went buy and nothing happened. I moved to Michigan for a new job and a friend invited me to a wood turning club in Kalamazoo it was the best thing I did. The first demo was by Lyle Jamison and he talked about the need to keep your tool sharp. What an eye opener. I basically just played at turning until I retired and moved to Ohio in 2015. Turning on a shop smith presents a lot of challenges, but I learned and challenged myself except I just couldn’t do what the pros were doing.
I joined the NCWT club and in 2020 I purchased a 42/24 3hp Powermatic lathe. "Go big or go home". I told my wife I was tired of blaming the Shop Smith for my problems turning, with the new lathe I had no excuses. I sold my bowls at craft shows when my wife had a show. After a couple of years I started making Charcuterie Boards and the small tables. Now I have my own booth and most of the time I outsell my wife. This is our fun money that we use to vacation and take our kids and grandkids.
