Demonstrating a Traveling Lathe &
Creating a Basket Weave Pattern
I have been involved in woodworking since I was a teenager. Most of my work at that time involved “flat work” making cabinets, shelves and whatever might be needed for friends and family.
I had a lathe prior to joining the club, but had only used it for simple spindles and really did not know how to properly use the four tools that came with it. I started making some simple basswood ornament shapes in 2000. In 2014 I joined the BWWT club after seeing members demonstrate turning at the Minerva Ohio Art and Jazz Festival.
I started to embellish the ornaments with simple carving in 2019. Each year I try to improve my turning, woodburning and carving skills. Most of my turnings are smaller items such as the Christmas ornaments, boxes and vases. I occasionally will turn a platter or bowl.
I have been involved in the Pens for Troops, Beads of Courage, and the Pegasus and SAM training events. I am also a BWWT Past President (2016). In addition to BWWT, I am involved in several carving clubs.
I have demonstrated in various local art fairs and festivals. I have been submitting pieces in the Wayne Center for Arts show since my involvement in the club

As a result of my field demonstrations and my increasing age, I have developed what I consider to be a traveling lathe/workstation. I have arranged things such that I can easily break the lathe down into lighter weight pieces that I can handle by myself for loading/unloading and set-up/tear-down. I have also made some simple fixtures that allow me to demonstrate wood burning or carving right on the lathe. I will do a show and tell on this lathe during the demonstration.
My demonstration this month is intended to fit into the Easter theme of the overall demonstration. I will be showing how to layout a basket weave pattern on the surface of an existing bowl for the purpose of wood burning or carving. The idea being that a person can make an Easter basket by adding a pattern to a bowl of their choice. Adding the weave pattern is something I had not tried before, so this will be a first-time demonstration on this subject for me. I will share what I have learned along the way in preparing for this demo.
