2015 Collaborative Project - A Castle Style Spinning Wheel

There are several different types of spinning wheels.  The difference is in the position of certain parts and in the size, but those parts still have the same function. 
The basic types are Saxony wheel (horizontal type - which is considered to be traditional model), the Norwegian wheel (horizontal on a bench - similar to Saxony wheel), and Castle wheel (vertical type - also known as Upright wheel).  The Castle wheel is more compact than majority of other models.

To create a spinning wheel, you need high-quality hardwood, without knots and defects. Most parts are made by using a lathe for processing of wood and for making this type of spinning wheel you need a solid experience in woodturning. Wood that will serve you well in the production is Maple, cherry, walnut.

Primary & Secondary Pillars - Base & Footman

This Castle Style Spinning Wheel is a rather complex projects. It contains nearly 50 different parts. It's made primarily of wood, with just those few necessary parts made of metal. Construction is based on mortise and tendon joints.

This project was a collaborative effort of 13 members of the BWWT "family" and was completed over a 4 month period of time.  The Spinning Wheel was chosen from a number of suggestions submitted by the group due to the number of lathe turned items involved and the intrigue of this classic design.
