Dirk Falther
Turning a Mushroom Lamp
Dirk is the BWWT treasurer, 15 year member, and enjoys turning all types of projects. I was able to overcome my very first turning project fiasco, in junior high, when I watch in horror as my large salad bowl spun off the lathe during final finishing and exploded when it hit the floor. My shop teacher picked it up and said this will make a nice candy dish. Let’s get it back on the lathe. So I put it back on the lathe and turned it into a candy dish, which I still have 50 years later. It’s my reminder to persevere and experiment. I took a break from turning when I went off to college and the got back into to after meeting up with BWWT members at Hartville Hardware, who convinced me attend a meeting at Camp Y Noah. I went to summer camp there and it was chance see the camp 40 years later. Nothing had changed!
The mushroom lamp is a newer design that incorporates 5V LED lighting. There are many design options for the LEDs, which I’m exploring to include in turned pieces. You’ll see a couple of options for the mushroom caps and the stems to give you the ideas you can try on your own. The LED strips are easy to wire and the 5V power is very safe and easy to work with. We have put together about 25 LED kits that include the LED strips, touch switch, connectors, USB cable & USB power plug to create your own lamp or experiment with other uses. The kits will be $15 each, all proceeds going to BWWT.
